Samsung Semiconductor’s Vipin Anand: Engineering Innovation from SSIR to Global Mobility
Vipin Anand, a graphics engineer on the AP Software team at Samsung Semiconductor India Research (SSIR), contributes to graphics solutions that support Samsung’s mobile and wearable devices used around the world.
SSIR continues to play an important role in advancing mobile technology, and Anand’s work reflects the team’s focus on building reliable, end-to-end graphics software. His experience spans multiple domains, from early digital TV projects to graphics drivers for Galaxy wearables.
Driving Graphics Innovation for Mobile and Wearables
Currently, Anand leads graphics driver development for mobile segments, overseeing the full software development lifecycle—from simulator environments and pre-silicon testing to final commercialization. He played a key role in developing the ‘Always On Display’ (AOD) feature for Galaxy Watches, addressing hardware limitations through software simulation tools.
Through Samsung’s Global Mobility Program, Anand has also collaborated with teams in Korea, working closely with chip design and software optimization to improve performance and stability for next-generation System-on-Chips (SoCs).
Interview: Powering Innovation through Curiosity

Q. You are the first engineer in your family. What drew you to this field?
I hold an M.Tech in Embedded Systems from BITS Pilani. I became interested in graphics technologies such as OpenGL and Vulkan, particularly how 3D objects are rendered. My father was an economics professor, so being the first engineer in the family is a point of pride, and I hope to inspire the next generation.
Q. Can you describe your current role at SSIR?
At SSIR, based in Bengaluru, my role involves graphics driver development for mobile AP software. We provide end-to-end solutions, working closely with SARC (Samsung Austin Research Center) to develop features for next-generation SoCs. We identify performance bottlenecks and ensure that the graphics software is optimized from the pre-silicon stage to the final product.
Q. What does working at Samsung mean to you personally?
Samsung provides a platform where innovation impacts millions of people globally. It gives me a great sense of pride to tell my friends and family that I worked on the devices they use every day. Joining Samsung was a dream for me because of its popularity in India, and it has been vital to both my personal and professional growth.
Q. You’ve worked on several key projects. Which ones stand out?
Earlier in my career, I worked on digital TVs and Blu-ray players. More recently, I was involved in Galaxy Watch projects. Developing the software for the ‘Always On Display’ feature was a unique challenge, especially when hardware IPs weren’t fully available yet. We had to find our own open-source simulator tools to keep the driver development moving forward.
Q. What is your message to aspiring researchers and engineers?
If you are keen on innovation that directly impacts user experience, Samsung is a great place to be. It offers a platform to learn cutting-edge technologies and apply your expertise to develop solutions that are among the most advanced in the world. I always strive to contribute to the success of every project by delivering the highest-quality software possible.
